St. Joseph’s scored twice in the top of the eighth inning and withstood an Ohio Wesleyan rally in the bottom of the frame to take a 3-2 non-conference decision in the Bishops’ season opener on Monday in Fort Myers, Fla.

Senior shortstop Erica Bryan (Wapakoneta) went 2-for-3 and scored a run to highlight the Bishop offense. Junior outfielder Chelsea Denman (Pendleton, Ind./Pendleton Heights) and junior third baseman Jenna Greenberg (New Albany) each went 2-for-4.

Senior righthander Dani Haley (Maumee/Anthony Wayne) went the distance in the circle for Ohio Wesleyan, scattering 5 hits and striking out 11.

Sophomore outfielder Lilly Gresh (Westerville/North) singled home a run that gave Ohio Wesleyan an early lead in the nightcap, but Edgewood came back to take a 3-1 non-conference win in the second game of the doubleheader on Monday in Fort Myers, Fla.

The Bishops took the lead in the second inning when sophomore second baseman Rachael Carter (Berthoud, Colo.) reached second on a throwing error by Eagle catcher Dylan Bahrke, moved to third on an infield out, and scored on Gresh’s single to right.

Edgewood answered with a pair of runs in the top of the third as Kylie Clark led off with a single and scored on a double by Rachel DeJongh. Carlene DeCoster was hit by a pitch and Jackie Diesch beat out an infield single to load the bases, and DeJongh scored the go-ahead run on a fielder’s choice off the bat of Alyssa Schulting.

The Eagles added an insurance run in the fifth on Schulting’s RBI single.

Carter and Bryan (Wapakoneta) collected 2 hits apiece for Ohio Wesleyan.

Sophomore lefthander Sarah Flint (Westerville/St. Francis DeSales) worked the complete game in the circle, scattering 5 hits while striking out 3 and walking none.
