In an effort to shore things up on the defensive side of the field, the Ohio Machine traded for New York defenseman Steven Waldeck, the club announced Wednesday.

Waldeck, who has scored a goal and picked up a pair of ground balls in four games this season, comes to Ohio with the Lizards’ seventh-round pick in the 2015 MLL Collegiate Draft. In exchange, the Machine sent its second-round pick in next year’s draft to New York. Ohio released defenseman Ryan Nizolek to complete the deal.

Waldeck played in all 14 of New York’s games in 2013 and scored three goals — including two 2-pointers — and picked up 28 ground balls. He played for Hamilton from 2011-12 and Toronto, where he was selected with the 17th overall pick in the 2010 MLL Collegiate Draft, prior to his time in New York.

The Levittown, N.Y., native played for Stony Brook from 2007 to 2010. He led the team with 112 ground balls as a senior, and also scored 10 goals with four assists. Prior to that, he played with Machine goalie Scott Rodgers at MacArthur High School in New York.

The Machine returns to Selby Stadium Friday at 4 p.m. to take on the Chesapeake Bayhawks. Tickets for the game against Chesapeake start at $12 and can be purchased by calling 614-754-1973 or visiting www.theohiomachine.com/tickets.
