PUTNAM COUNTY - Two people died Friday afternoon after a vehicle swerved left of center south of Ottawa.
At 2:38 p.m., three vehicles were traveling north on state Route 65. The first vehicle had stopped, preparing to turn left onto Road 9-K. The third vehicle, a 2000 Lexus LS400, driven by Alan J. Ducey, 59, of Ottawa, did not see that the other two vehicles were stopped. To avoid rear-ending the vehicles, Ducey swerved into the left lane, where he hit a 2008 Buick Lucerne, driven by Christine A. Hayden, 62, of Columbus Grove. Also in the vehicle was Joan M. Beam, 85, of Columbus Grove. A 1991 Mitsubishi truck, driven by Asa J. Mortimer, 37, of Columbus Grove, was also traveling southbound on state Route 65 and rear-ended Hayden.
Hayden was transported to Ottawa Ambulatory Care by Putnam County EMS with critical injuries and was later pronounced dead. Beam was flown to St. Rita’s Medical Center with critical injuries. She, too, was later pronounced dead. Ducey was transported to Lima Memorial Health System with serious, but non-life threatening injuries. Mortimer was transported to Ottawa Ambulatory Care, where he was treated and released.
The Ohio State Highway Patrol was in charge of the investigation. Also assisting at the scene were the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office, Ottawa Police Department, Ottawa Fire Department and EMS and the Kalida Fire Department.
