OTTOVILLE — A dive team recovered the body of a 59-year-old Ottoville man from a family pond late Sunday night.

The Putnam County Sheriff’s Office received a call at 10:34 p.m. Sunday reporting Donald J. Burgei, 59, of Ottoville, had possibly drowned in the family pond at 24962 Road P in Monterey Township. The caller said Burgei had been home alone and was missing at the time of the 911 call.

The Putnam County Sheriff’s Office Dive Team and Delphos Fire and Rescue Dive Team searched the water. At 11:49 p.m., they discovered Burgei’s body and pulled it from the water.

The Sheriff’s Office, Putnam County Coroner’s Office and Lucas County Coroner’s Office continue to investigate the cause of death, and an autopsy has been ordered.

The Continental Fire Department and its boat, Ottoville EMS, Ottoville Fire Department and Delphos Fire Department also assisted at the scene. The call originally went into the Van Wert County’s Sheriff’s Office because of the property’s proximity to the county line but was transferred to Putnam County.

A 17-year-old girl from Rockford died in the same pond Feb. 4, 2012. Brianna Coon was driving on the road when a curve caused her to brake suddenly and her car went off the road into the pond.

Coon called 911 and dispatchers tried to trace the signal from her phone but her exact location could not be determined. Coon’s car was submerged for about two hours when a state trooper saw a hubcap alongside the pond. Coon was pronounced dead at the scene.

The Sheriff’s Office did not return phone calls seeking additional information.
