Memorial Day events planned

Memorial Day activities are planned across Delaware County on Monday, May 30.

Here’s a guide to events:

• The city of Delaware will have Memorial Day services Monday at the Oak Grove Cemetery at 10 a.m. in Soldiers Circle.

Pastor Mark Allison of the First Baptist Church of Delaware will provide the invocation.

Delaware High School Junior ROTC will present the colors and lead the Pledge of Allegiance.

A Civil War re-enactment group will fire volleys from a Civil War era cannon.

Delaware County Sheriff Russell Martin will speak on the topic of Memorial Day.

Vietnam Veterans of America, Chapter 1095, will provide a rifle volley and present taps.

• The city of Delaware’s new Veterans Memorial on Houk Road will be dedicated at noon with key speaker Joe DiGenova, a member of Delaware City Council.

Pastor Mark Allison will provide the invocation.

• Galena will hold a 1 p.m. Memorial Day ceremony Monday.

The national anthem will be sung by Mary Bloch.

Galena Village Council member David Simmons will offer opening remarks.

Village Mayor Thomas Hopper will present a memorial wreath at the G&T Club World War II memorial.

The featured speaker will be 2016 Big Walnut High School graduate Madelyn Wecker.

The ceremony concludes with 21-gun salute and “Taps.”

After presentations on the square, participants will proceed to the Galena Cemetery where Simmons will give a historical presentation about veterans in the cemetery.

Sunbury’s Col. Benson Hough American Legion Post 457 will provide the honor guard.

• The city of Powell will host its annual Memorial Day parade and ceremony at 10 a.m. Monday in downtown Powell.

This year’s parade will feature more than 70 units and will begin on Grace Drive and follow west to North Liberty Street.

Participants will then travel south on Liberty Street to Olentangy Street, where they will turn right and continue west.

The parade ends at the railroad crossing on Olentangy Street.

Following the parade, a ceremony will be held immediately at the Greater Powell Veterans Memorial in Village Green Park, located at 47 Hall St.

Following Mayor Brian Lorenz’s remarks, Jerred Phillips will deliver the keynote speech.

After Phillips’ speech, Boy Scout Troop 428 will hold a flag retirement ceremony.

Jerred Phillips is a member of Summit for Soldiers, an organization that focuses on post-traumatic stress syndrome and suicide awareness.

• The Radnor community will honor the men and women of the armed forces on Memorial Day with a parade and activities.

The celebration begins with breakfast from 8 to 10 a.m. at Radnor United Church of Christ.

The Memorial Day parade will start at 10 a.m.

After the parade, retired Air Force Lt. Col. Bill Price will speak at Radnor Cemetery.

Price grew up in the Radnor area and is a graduate of Buckeye Valley High School and Ohio Wesleyan University.

Radnor’s events include:

• The Pledge of Allegiance led by Maggie Brady.

• The Gettysburg Address presented by Ryan Shearer.

• The Preamble to the Constitution presented by Nick Shearer.

• The Buckeye Valley alumni band will play patriotic music honoring the Armed Forces.

After the ceremony, the Radnor Township Fire Department will host a hog roast at 4061 State Route 203.

The day’s events are sponsored by the Radnor Heritage Society.

• The village of Sunbury on Monday will conduct its traditional Memorial Day events.

The ceremony begins with a program at 10 a.m. in J.R. Smith Park with the Sunbury Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8736 honor guard ceremony.

Then the ceremony will move to Veterans Memorial on the northwest corner of Sunbury Village Square for a laying of the wreath ceremony.

The final ceremony will be held in Sunbury Park.

Members of Sunbury Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 8736 will host the program.

The Big Walnut High School marching band will provide the music.

A roll call will recognize veterans in the audience who have served in World War I, World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Panama, Grenada, Lebanon, Haiti, Desert Storm, Somalia, Bosnia, the Persian Gulf, Serbia, Afghanistan and Iraq, as well as prisoners of war.

Also included in the day’s activities will be the traditional 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. rain-or-shine flea market on Sunbury Village Square, hosted by the Big Walnut Music and Marching Boosters.
