LIMA — We’re No. 1.
In the consumption of KFC’s Famous Bowls, that is. Lima is the top consumer of the kitchen-sink dish, the world’s largest chicken restaurant has reported.
The company listed the city with the highest number of average sales of bowls by restaurant, company spokesman Rick Maynard said.
“We think the people of Lima have great taste,” Maynard said.
The Famous Bowl debuted seven years ago and includes KFC’s crispy chicken, corn, mashed potatoes, gravy and cheese, all in one dish.
Elida Road KFC manager Katie Helmke said the restaurant does sell a lot of bowls.
“It’s an all-day, everyday thing,” Helmke said. “As soon as we open the door, we’re selling them. Sometimes, in the drive through, I’ll have six or eight go to one car.”
The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre, Pa., area came in second in KFC’s data.
The bowl is part of KFC’s $3.99 combo promotion through March 23.
The data came about as part of a larger survey KFC conducted, asking people about their plate preferences — whether they were OK with or opposed to their food touching, Maynard said. While 57 percent said they enjoyed mixing food on their plate, 43 percent prefer to keep items separate.
The bowl has become popular because it’s a hearty meal, Maynard said.
“It’s a fulfilling, wholesome meal. I think people who work hard want a serious meal for lunch, or at the end of the day,” Maynard said. “It reminds me of mom, putting everything on my plate and then just diving in.”
Helmke said she personally enjoys them, also.
“I think it’s because it’s all-in-one,” she said. “You don’t have to order individual sides.”
The folks at Activate Allen County (a group using a grant to fight obesity and other health concerns in the county) might also want diners to know the Famous Bowl is 680 calories, with 31 grams of fat and 2,130 milligrams of sodium, which is about the FDA-recommended amount of sodium for a day.
KFC Corp. is based in Louisville, Ky. There are more than 18,000 KFC outlets in more than 115 countries and territories around the world.
The Lima KFC was remodeled in 2012 by new owners Bagshaw Enterprises Inc. The company has operated Kentucky Fried Chicken restaurants since 1971.
