Thanksgiving should not be forgotten

To the editor:

Perhaps some of you have become aware that the commercial calendar now seems to go from Halloween directly to Christmas, almost completely skipping Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving is one of our truly foundational days. Without the bounty of the first harvest in the New World, which was planted with advice from English speaking, yet locally knowledgeable Squanto, the already decimated Pilgrims would not likely have survived their second winter.

So it was with a warm sense of pleasure that earlier this week, I took in the Thanksgiving-themed window display at Fundamentals bookshop on West Winter Street. May I offer my congratulations to its owner for resisting the commercial temptations of an earlier start to the Christmas shopping season, and continuing to remember those courageous first settlers. May we, as they, also give thanks to the Providence that so clearly protected and preserved their lives through extraordinary means, allowing this nation to take root and begin to grow.
