Smashburger opens next week, employs 32

As you walk into the new Smashburger at Owenfield Drive and Windbrush Avenue, along U.S. 23 at Lewis Center, a sign immediately explains the restaurant’s name.The sign says the burger starts out as a “never-frozen ball of one hundred percent certified Angus beef.”Owner/operator Drew Hansen described what happens next.“We cook our meat in a smashing process,” Hansen said. “We put a raw burger patty down on a buttered 400-degree grill and smash it for 10 seconds with a special plate, which forms it into a burger and sears it into the grill. Then we put our special seasoning on there, and when it’s done, all the juiciness and flavor is sealed into it.”

 

O’Brien refuses to withdraw from race

With less than three weeks until the May 6 primary election, the leader of the Delaware County Republican Party (DCRP) is calling for a candidate to withdraw from a contested race for a county commissioner seat.Bob Mann, chairman of the party’s central committee, has asked Delaware County Commissioner Ken O’Brien to drop out of the race, citing the fact the party will be legally required to select a successor for O’Brien if he wins the seat.
