Braves, Patriots cement spots in district championship

Another year, another Liberty-Olentangy girls soccer showdown deep into the postseason.

The district rivals ended each others’ seasons each of the last two years and, thanks to a pair of convincing wins in their respective Division I district semifinal showdowns Tuesday night, this season won’t be any different.

The Braves, who upset the top-seeded Patriots in a district championship two years ago, beat Canal Winchester 4-1 in Lewis Center. Sydney Richards finished with a hat trick while Ireland Fallona added a goal just for good measure.

The Patriots, who knocked off the Braves in last fall’s regional championship game, set up a rematch with a 3-0 win over visiting New Albany. Natalie Amodeo staked Liberty to a 1-0 halftime lead and it never looked back, adding a pair of second-half tallies to account for the final margin.

The district final is set for Saturday, with the time and place yet to be determined. It’ll be the second meeting between the two this season, with Olentangy capturing an OCC-Buckeye Division championship thanks to a 3-0 win over Liberty earlier this month.

FIELD HOCKEY

The Olentangy Liberty field hockey team advanced to the Elite Eight for the fifth straight season, punching its ticket with a convincing 10-1 win over visiting Bexley Tuesday afternoon.

Columbus Academy 4, Orange 0

The most successful season in Pioneer history came to a close Tuesday in Columbus as host Academy clamped down on defense to get the job done.

Alyssa Menzo allowed the four goals in the Orange net, but stopped seven shots in the setback.
