It wasn’t the prettiest of wins, but the Buckeye Valley girls basketball team used a huge second quarter and solid edge in rebounding to notch a 38-32 season-opening victory Tuesday in Grandview.

Down 10-8 after one, the Barons (1-0) outscored the Bobcats 13-2 in the second to race out to a 21-12 halftime advantage.

Grandview won the third and fourth frames by slim margins, 7-6 and 13-11, respectively, but BV was able to hold on to the lead the entire second half.

The Barons shot just 27 percent from the floor, but hauled down nine offensive rebounds to account for eight critical second-chance points. BV outrebounded Grandview 31-22 overall.

Logan Hatcher and Alaina Radcliffe led Buckeye Valley with 10 points apiece. Hatcher also tied for the team lead with five boards while adding a blocked shot to her stat line.

Gabrielle Legg and Tess Hughes also chipped in, adding four points apiece. Legg also had a team-best four assists in the win.

Big Walnut 54, Marion Harding 49

Taryn Hammond poured in 10 points and Katie Neff, Stacey Walters and Erin Boehm added seven apiece as the Golden Eagles notched a season-opening win Tuesday in Marion.

Big Walnut (1-0) came out on fire, outscoring the Presidents 24-11 in the first quarter. The Eagles were outscored in each of the final three quarters, but, thanks to the hot start, it didn’t matter.

Hayes 49, Patriot Academy 15

The Pacers got defensive in their opener, managing to hold visiting Patriot Academy scoreless through a half en route to a lopsided non-league win Tuesday in Delaware.

Hayes (1-0) won the first quarter 11-0 before taking the second 10-0 to head into halftime up 21-0.

The Pacers cruised the rest of the way.

Ten different players cracked the scoring column for Hayes. Sydney McMillin finished with a game-best eight points while Madison Eldridge, Keiona Houser and Piper Adkins finished with seven apiece.
