COLUMBUS — An attor­ney for a sui­ci­dal ani­mal owner’s widow who is seek­ing the return of exotic ani­mals that sur­vived an Octo­ber release said she has ade­quate cages for them at her east­ern Ohio farm, accord­ing to a let­ter obtained by The Asso­ci­ated Press.

ALEXANDRIA, Va. — The first major nutri­tional over­haul of school meals in more than 15 years means most offer­ings — includ­ing the always pop­u­lar pizza — will come with less sodium, more whole grains and a wider selec­tion of fruits and veg­eta­bles on the side.

Government still seeking source of tainted turkey

WASHINGTON — Con­sumers look­ing for answers about a sal­mo­nella out­break linked to ground turkey will have to con­tinue to wait as the gov­ern­ment inves­ti­gates the source of at least 76 ill­nesses and one death. The Agri­cul­ture Depart­ment and the fed­eral Cen­ters for Dis­ease Con­trol and Pre­ven­tion say they are still look­ing for a source of the out­break, which dates back to March. The Minnesota-based meat com­pany, Cargill, said Tues­day that it has been con­tacted by the USDA as part of the inves­ti­ga­tion and is work­ing with the depart­ment. Cargill has not been named as the culprit.

Chain restaurants will make kids menus healthier

WASHINGTON — Par­ents seek­ing health­ier restau­rant meals for their kids can start to look beyond chicken nuggets and macaroni-and-cheese. At least 19 restau­rant chains — includ­ing Burger King, Chili’s, IHOP and Friendly’s — said Wednes­day that they will include health­ier options on their children’s menus. At least 15,000 restau­rant loca­tions will focus on increas­ing serv­ings of fruits and veg­eta­bles, lean pro­teins, whole grains and low-fat dairy. The items will have less fats, sug­ars and sodium.
