96 Yemeni soldiers killed in suicide bombing

SANAA, Yemen — A Yemeni sol­dier det­o­nated a bomb hid­den in his mil­i­tary uni­form dur­ing a rehearsal for a mil­i­tary parade, killing 96 fel­low sol­diers and wound­ing at least 200 on Mon­day in one of the dead­liest attacks in the cap­i­tal in years.

RIYADH, Saudi Ara­bia — Yemen’s author­i­tar­ian Pres­i­dent Ali Abdul­lah Saleh agreed Wednes­day to step down amid a fierce upris­ing to oust him after 33 years in power. The U.S. and its pow­er­ful Gulf allies pressed for the deal, con­cerned that a secu­rity col­lapse in the impov­er­ished Arab nation was allow­ing an active al-Qaida fran­chise to gain a firmer foothold.

SANAA, Yemen — Gov­ern­ment forces and tribal fight­ers exchanged gun and artillery fire in Yemen’s cap­i­tal early Wednes­day, send­ing the crackle of gun­fire and resound­ing booms over the city in fresh fight­ing that killed at least 41 peo­ple. The fight­ing spread to new areas, with tribes­men from the pow­er­ful Hasid con­fed­er­a­tion seiz­ing build­ings in neigh­bor­hoods in the city’s south and northwest.
