Obama says Vietnam veterans too often ‘denigrated’

WASHINGTON — Pres­i­dent Barack Obama paid trib­ute Mon­day to the men and women who have died defend­ing Amer­ica, point­ing to Viet­nam vet­er­ans as an under-appreciated and some­times maligned group of war heroes who remained true to their nation despite an unwel­come homecoming.

Bombs rock Baghdad, raising fears of sectarian war

BAGHDAD (AP) — A ter­ri­fy­ing wave of bombs tore through mostly Shi­ite neigh­bor­hoods of Bagh­dad on Thurs­day, killing at least 69 peo­ple and evok­ing fears that Iraq could dis­solve into a new round of sec­tar­ian vio­lence now that Amer­i­can troops have left.

Obama rules out releasing grisly bin Laden photos

WASHINGTON — Pres­i­dent Barack Obama said Wednes­day he has decided not to release death pho­tos of ter­ror­ist Osama bin Laden because their graphic nature could incite vio­lence and cre­ate national secu­rity risks for the United States. Sep­a­rately, offi­cials told The Asso­ci­ated Press that the Navy SEALs who stormed bin Laden’s com­pound shot him dead after they saw him appear to lunge for a weapon.
