101 candidates file for local elections

Some elected offi­cials in Delaware County have cho­sen to bow out of pub­lic office at the end of the year, while other famil­iar faces are seek­ing to make a return to the bal­lot this Novem­ber. In total, 101 peo­ple filed paper­work with the Delaware County Board of Elec­tions to run for 62 var­i­ous town­ship, school board and vil­lage and city coun­cil posi­tions. The dead­line for can­di­dates wish­ing to run for local offices expir­ing at the end of this year passed at 4 p.m. Wednesday.

Delaware city advised to hurry with YMCA

Time is run­ning out for Delaware City to strike an agree­ment with the YMCA, if the city’s planned recre­ation cen­ter is to open in early Novem­ber as pro­posed. A motion vote on the agree­ment prior to hold­ing the typ­i­cal three read­ings on the mat­ter was defeated. Five votes were required to approve the sus­pen­sion; coun­cil voted 4–3.

Council accepts Nova liquor permit request

Despite Delaware Police Chief Russ Martin’s rec­om­men­da­tion, Delaware City Coun­cil agreed to not con­test a liquor per­mit as requested by Nova Restau­rant, LLC. Mar­tin said a rou­tine liquor per­mit back­ground inves­ti­ga­tion revealed some “dis­con­cert­ing” infor­ma­tion, such as the cur­rent charges against restau­rant owner Denise Dunlap.

City hears updated YMCA agreement

Delaware City Coun­cil heard an updated ver­sion of the YMCA pro­posal to take over some city’s recre­ational func­tions that, if accepted, could increase the city’s antic­i­pated sav­ings to about $147,000 a year.

Mobile food vendors OK’d in downtown

Mobile food ven­dors now can sell their ham­burg­ers and hot dogs on pri­vate prop­erty in down­town Delaware. After months of dis­cus­sion on the topic, Delaware City Coun­cil on Mon­day took two votes on the issue, one which upholds the city plan­ning commission’s vote to not include an exclu­sion zone and another that approves zon­ing text and minor changes allow­ing for a more stream­lined process for those set­ting up tem­po­rary food carts in the city.

Council hears questions on Riggle debate

Local attor­ney Robert Owens asked Delaware City Coun­cil Mon­day to con­sider pub­licly dis­cussing whether coun­cil­woman Car­olyn Rig­gle vio­lated the city charter.

Delaware City Council Ward boundaries to change
