CHICAGO — Less than a month old, Savan­nah Dan­nel­ley scrunches her tiny face into a scowl as a nurse gen­tly squirts a dose of methadone into her mouth. The infant is going through drug with­drawal and is being treated with the same nar­cotic pre­scribed for her mother to fight addic­tion to pow­er­ful pre­scrip­tion painkillers.

Obama ‘putting colleges on notice’ on high tuition

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — Pres­i­dent Barack Obama fired a warn­ing at the nation’s col­leges and uni­ver­si­ties on Fri­day, threat­en­ing to strip their fed­eral aid if they “jack up tuition” every year and to give the money instead to schools show­ing restraint and value.

A Republican-appointed judge joined with a Demo­c­ra­tic appointee for the 2–1 major­ity in another mile­stone for Obama’s hotly debated sig­na­ture domes­tic ini­tia­tive — the first time a Repub­li­can fed­eral court appointee has affirmed the mer­its of the law.
