Court appears split by ideology over health care

WASHINGTON — Con­clud­ing three days of fer­vent, pub­lic dis­agree­ment, a Supreme Court seem­ingly split over ide­ol­ogy will now wres­tle in pri­vate about whether to strike down key parts or even all of Pres­i­dent Barack Obama’s his­toric health care law. The jus­tices’ deci­sion, due this June, will affect the way vir­tu­ally every Amer­i­can receives and pays for care.

Court questions life without parole for juveniles

WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court debated Tues­day whether young teenagers con­victed of killing some­one may be locked up for life with no chance of parole, the lat­est in a line of cases seek­ing a sec­ond chance for young people.

A living Constitution?

The world is full of great rival­ries. There’s the Yan­kees and the Red Sox, Ohio State and Michi­gan, Microsoft vs. Apple, Rome vs. Carthage or the Hat­fields and the McCoys. When it comes to the legal world, how­ever, one doesn’t typ­i­cally think of great rival­ries. Yet in the field of con­sti­tu­tional law lies a great rivalry that has the poten­tial to have a major impact on the lives of all Americans.

WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court on Mon­day blocked a mas­sive sex dis­crim­i­na­tion law­suit against Wal-Mart on behalf of female employ­ees in a deci­sion that makes it harder to mount large-scale bias claims against the nation’s biggest companies.

High court to Calif: Cut prison inmates by 30,000

WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court on Mon­day nar­rowly endorsed reduc­ing California’s cramped prison pop­u­la­tion by more than 30,000 inmates to fix some­times deadly prob­lems in med­ical care, rul­ing that fed­eral judges retain enor­mous power to over­see trou­bled state prisons.
