Survey: 1 in 4 US women victims of severe violence

ATLANTA — It’s a star­tling num­ber: 1 in 4 women sur­veyed by the gov­ern­ment say they were vio­lently attacked by their hus­bands or boyfriends. Experts in domes­tic vio­lence don’t find it too sur­pris­ing, although some aspects of the sur­vey may have led to higher num­bers than are some­times reported.

WASHINGTON — Pedi­a­tri­cians are sup­posed to track if young­sters are putting on too many pounds — but a new study found less than a quar­ter of par­ents of over­weight chil­dren recall the doc­tor ever say­ing there was a problem.

The biggest study ever to exam­ine the pos­si­ble con­nec­tion between cell­phones and can­cer found no evi­dence of any link, sug­gest­ing that bil­lions of peo­ple who are rarely more than a few inches from their phones have no spe­cial health concerns.

Kids’ ER concussion visits up 60 pct over decade

ATLANTA — The num­ber of ath­letic chil­dren going to hos­pi­tals with con­cus­sions is up 60 per­cent in the past decade, a find­ing that is likely due to par­ents and coaches being more care­ful about treat­ing head injuries, accord­ing to a new fed­eral study.

Fetus gender test raises ethical concerns

CHICAGO — Boy or girl? A sim­ple blood test in mothers-to-be can answer that ques­tion with sur­pris­ing accu­racy at about seven weeks, a research analy­sis has found. Though not widely offered by U.S. doc­tors, gender-detecting blood tests have been sold online to con­sumers for the past few years. Their promises of early and accu­rate results prompted genet­ics researchers to take a closer look.
