White House: Time to try another tactic in Syria

WASHINGTON — It may be time for the world to acknowl­edge that a cease-fire is not hold­ing in Syria, and that it is time to try another approach to stop the vio­lence, the White House said Thursday.

Marines probe video depicting urination on corpses

WASHINGTON — The Marine Corps said Wednes­day it is inves­ti­gat­ing a video depict­ing what appears to be four Marines uri­nat­ing on the corpses of Tal­iban fight­ers. In a state­ment, the Marine Corps said it has not ver­i­fied the ori­gin or authen­tic­ity of the YouTube video. But it also said the actions por­trayed are not con­sis­tent with Marine values.

Panetta: Bigger defense cuts would ‘weaken’ US

WASHINGTON — Large new cuts in defense spend­ing would “ter­ri­bly weaken” U.S. national secu­rity, Defense Sec­re­tary Leon Panetta said Tues­day as he and Sec­re­tary of State Hillary Rod­ham Clin­ton used a rare joint inter­view to argue that the nation can­not afford to keep play­ing par­ti­san chicken with its finances. Panetta expressed opti­mism about progress by American-led forces against the Tal­iban in Afghanistan and by NATO forces in sup­port of anti-government rebels in Libya. He cited those con­flicts as exam­ples of why severe cuts to spend­ing on defense and diplo­macy would be dangerous.
