WASHINGTON — The last frontier on Earth is out-of-this-world, desolate, foreboding, and moon-like, James Cameron said after diving to the deepest part of the ocean. And he loved it. Cameron, who knows a little about alien worlds having made the movie “Avatar,” said when he got to this strange cold, dark place 7 miles below the western Pacific Ocean that only two other men have been to, there was one thing he promised to himself: He wanted to drink in how unusual it is.

The Misplaced Stuff: NASA loses moon, space rocks

WASHINGTON (AP) — Astronauts may have had the ‘right stuff’ to go to the moon, but when it comes to keeping track of what they brought back, NASA seems to have misplaced some of the stuff.

WASHINGTON (AP) — A newly discovered planet is eerily similar to Earth and is sitting outside our solar system in what seems to be the ideal place for life, except for one hitch. It’s a bit too big.

WASHINGTON — Count your blessings this Thanksgiving. It’s good for you. While it seems pretty obvious that gratitude is a positive emotion, psychologists for decades rarely delved into the science of giving thanks. But in the last several years they have, learning in many experiments that it is one of humanity’s most powerful emotions. It makes you happier and can change your attitude about life, like an emotional reset button.

Bedside test finds awareness in vegetative brains

NEW YORK — In recent years, scientists have learned that some patients believed to be in a vegetative state actually have some awareness and that they might be able to communicate. Now, a new study suggests a portable brain monitor can detect signs of this, perhaps making it possible someday for doctors to easily double-check the diagnosis at the bedside.

WASHINGTON — The global output of heat-trapping carbon dioxide jumped by the biggest amount on record, the U.S. Department of Energy calculated, a sign of how feeble the world’s efforts are at slowing man-made global warming. The new figures for 2010 mean that levels of greenhouse gases are higher than the worst case scenario outlined by climate experts just four years ago.

Deadly Black Death bug hasn’t changed, but we have

WASHINGTON — Scientists have cracked the genetic code of the Black Death, one of history’s worst plagues, and found that its modern day bacterial descendants haven’t changed much over 600 years. Luckily, we have. The evolution of society and medicine — and our own bodies — has far outpaced the evolution of that deadly bacterium, scientists said.
