Earth to satellite: When will you hit — and where?

CAPE CANAVERAL, Florida — NASA scientists are doing their best to tell us where a plummeting six-ton satellite will fall later this week. It’s just that if they’re off a little bit, it could mean the difference between hitting Florida or landing on New York. Or, say, Iran or India. Pinpointing where and when hurtling space debris will strike is an imprecise science. For now, scientists predict the earliest it will hit is Thursday U.S. time, the latest Saturday. The strike zone covers most of Earth.

A mighty fall for U.S. economic prestige

By now everyone is aware that the U.S. government has lost something the country has possessed since 1917 — its “best-of-the-best” stamp of financial approval from all major debt ratings agencies. Last Friday Standard and Poor’s downgraded U.S. Treasury securities from AAA to AA+, suggesting the U.S. government seems a little less likely to repay in a timely fashion both principal and interest on Treasury securities.

For many, the mention of an Orthodox Church brings up images of churches from specific countries and cultures — Greek Orthodox, Russian Orthodox, Romanian Orthodox. The Orthodox Church seems to have its name attached to almost every country with a Christian presence, including Japan, China, Finland, Latvia, Australia, and the United States has its Orthodox Church in America.
