‘Family Circus’ creator Bil Keane dies at 89

PHOENIX — Bil Keane’s “Family Circus” comics entertained readers with a simple but sublime mix of humor and traditional family values for more than a half century. The appeal endured, the author thought, because the American public needed the consistency.

Ghost Walk draws crowd, scares up funds for Delaware’s Arts Castle

A ghost in one Griswold Street home in Delaware likes to steal scissors. The spirits that haunted the former Sunny Vee Nursing Home on Lincoln Street had a proclivity for turning water faucets on and off. One house, this one on Griswold Street, too, is haunted by the ghost of an old woman who, in life, could never be warm enough. When the owners would leave (although the paranormal activity has died down dramatically as of late), they would frequently return to find the thermostat set at a blistering 95 degrees.

I have been surviving on the euphoria of love for our newborn son as of late. It is that love and those cute smiles that have seen me through many a sleepless night and the hormonal haze of adjusting to a newborn’s schedule both physically and mentally. However, the fog seems to be lifting now that we have reached week seven. I feel like we have finally turned the corner and I hope to have this column out more regularly. My best laid plans to keep it weekly have been just that…best laid plans.

Community active in library’s first Adult Summer Reading Program

This year, the Delaware County District Library launched its first ever Adult Summer Reading Program, and the community responded far beyond our expectations. Nearly 950 of you participated in the program, reading a grand total of 2,354 books — quite impressive statistics for our inaugural program. Participants in the programs received small incentives throughout the summer, including a book light, a water bottle and a messenger bag.

More than just a vegetable garden

Vegetable gardens are commonplace in suburbia; however, edible landscaping is a relatively new trend. What’s the difference? Instead of planting vegetables in neat rows, the recent trend is to use edibles in landscape design by intermingling them with ornamentals and even using edibles as ornamentals. The practice of edible landscaping is not new, as it dates back to the ancient Egyptians and was also used in the medieval monasteries by the monks in designing their gardens. The recent rise in the popularity of edible landscaping began in the early 1980s and is credited, by many, to Rosalind Creasy. She is the author of several popular books on the subject.
