Annan ‘impatient and frustrated’ over Syria

BEIRUT — Say­ing he is impa­tient and frus­trated, spe­cial envoy Kofi Annan called on the Syr­ian pres­i­dent Fri­day to imple­ment a U.N.-brokered peace plan fol­low­ing a hor­rific week­end mas­sacre that killed more than 100 people.

UN: Most of 108 killed in Syria were executed

BEIRUT — The U.N.’s human rights office said Tues­day that most of the 108 vic­tims of a mas­sacre in Syria last week were shot at close range, some of them women, chil­dren and entire fam­i­lies gunned down in their own homes.

Activist group: 144 dead across Syria

BEIRUT — A Syr­ian activist group reported Mon­day that 144 peo­ple have been killed across the coun­try, scores of them in the embat­tled oppo­si­tion strong­hold of Homs by secu­rity forces as they tried to flee. A team from the Syr­ian arm of the Red Cross deliv­ered aid to one of the city’s most dan­ger­ous neigh­bor­hoods after days of try­ing to reach the area.

Syria’s Assad vows ‘iron hand’ against opponents

BEIRUT — In his first speech since June, Syr­ian Pres­i­dent Bashar Assad vowed Tues­day to respond to threats against him with an “iron hand” and refused to step down, insist­ing he still has his people’s sup­port despite a 10-month-old revolt.
