Senate defeats bill to reverse birth control rule

WASHINGTON — The Sen­ate on Thurs­day defeated a GOP effort to roll back Pres­i­dent Barack Obama’s pol­icy on con­tra­cep­tion insur­ance cov­er­age in the first vote on an issue that raised ques­tions of reli­gious and women’s rights and riled Amer­i­cans in this volatile elec­tion year.

The for­mer Penn­syl­va­nia sen­a­tor defended his record in Wash­ing­ton and cast him­self as the most elec­table con­ser­v­a­tive alter­na­tive to front-runner Mitt Romney.

WASHINGTON — Seek­ing to gain polit­i­cal advan­tage, Pres­i­dent Barack Obama insisted Mon­day that Con­gress vote on his entire $447 bil­lion eco­nomic plan this month, a step promptly rejected by Repub­li­cans who called for both sides to find com­mon ground in their com­pet­ing pro­pos­als to stim­u­late growth.

Senate bill would hit China over undervalued money

WASHINGTON — The Sen­ate weighed on Mon­day whether to pun­ish China for under­valu­ing its cur­rency and tak­ing away Amer­i­can jobs. At issue is whether leg­is­la­tion would boost the Amer­i­can econ­omy, as its sup­port­ers argue, or ini­ti­ate a dam­ag­ing trade war with a major partner.
