Survey: 1 in 4 US women victims of severe violence

ATLANTA — It’s a startling number: 1 in 4 women surveyed by the government say they were violently attacked by their husbands or boyfriends. Experts in domestic violence don’t find it too surprising, although some aspects of the survey may have led to higher numbers than are sometimes reported.

US birth rate dips again

ATLANTA — The economy may well be the best form of birth control. U.S. births dropped for the third straight year — especially for young mothers — and experts think money worries are the reason.

Fed: 4 men got terror ideas from underground novel

GAINESVILLE, Ga. — In the violent underground novel Absolved, right-wing militia members upset about gun control make war against the U.S. government. This week, federal prosecutors accused four elderly Georgia men of plotting to use the book as a script for a real-life wave of terror and assassination involving explosives and the highly lethal poison ricin.

Deadly Black Death bug hasn’t changed, but we have

WASHINGTON — Scientists have cracked the genetic code of the Black Death, one of history’s worst plagues, and found that its modern day bacterial descendants haven’t changed much over 600 years. Luckily, we have. The evolution of society and medicine — and our own bodies — has far outpaced the evolution of that deadly bacterium, scientists said.

ATLANTA — The number of athletic children going to hospitals with concussions is up 60 percent in the past decade, a finding that is likely due to parents and coaches being more careful about treating head injuries, according to a new federal study.

Government still seeking source of tainted turkey

WASHINGTON — Consumers looking for answers about a salmonella outbreak linked to ground turkey will have to continue to wait as the government investigates the source of at least 76 illnesses and one death. The Agriculture Department and the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say they are still looking for a source of the outbreak, which dates back to March. The Minnesota-based meat company, Cargill, said Tuesday that it has been contacted by the USDA as part of the investigation and is working with the department. Cargill has not been named as the culprit.
