US uses bin Laden letters to degrade al-Qaida

WASHINGTON — Letters from Osama bin Laden’s last hideaway, released by U.S. officials intent on discrediting his terror organization, portray a network weak, inept and under siege — and its leader seemingly near wit’s end about the passing of his global jihad’s glory days.

FBI: 5 men charged in Ohio bridge bomb plot

CLEVELAND — Five men described by federal authorities as anarchists angry with corporate America and the government were charged Tuesday with plotting to bomb an Ohio bridge linking two wealthy Cleveland suburbs.

Change can be good, but it is seldom painless

While in Columbus last week President Obama suggested that those who oppose alternative energy sources might be considered members of the “flat earth society,” much like people who opposed exploration by the likes of Christopher Columbus. In this instance, according to the president, those who cling to fossil fuels and ignore alternative energy sources are much like ostriches, plunging their heads into the ground and failing to understand the need for change in any active, growing and healthy economy.

Winter wonderland

Although snow and ice can transform Ohio into a winter wonderland, this same snow and ice can threaten the very trees and plants they adorn.

Part 3: If you liked 2011, you’ll probably love 2012

What a difference a week makes. Last week as I described my 2012, economic outlook I undoubtedly came off as a pessimist rather than the “pragmatic optimistic” label I attached to myself. In my analysis, I indicated that other analysts might not be considering the full range of issues that could keep growth relatively modest throughout the year, including the influence of the EU sovereign debt crisis, the uncertainty regarding the state of consumer finances and the over-estimated strength of labor markets.

GOP maps strategy in wake of payroll tax debacle

WASHINGTON (AP) — When last seen in Washington, House Republicans were furious with their own leader, Speaker John Boehner, and angry with their Senate Republican brethren over how the showdown over the Social Security tax cut turned into a year-end political debacle.

With time, money running out, SC often turns nasty

COLUMBIA, S.C. — In mailboxes across South Carolina in 2007, likely Republican voters received a Christmas card signed by “The Romney Family” with a quotation from a 19th century Mormon leader suggesting God had several wives. Mitt Romney’s campaign, just a few weeks away from the 2008 presidential primary in a state where evangelicals look skeptically on the former Massachusetts governor’s Mormon faith, condemned the bogus card as politics at its worst. The sender never took credit. And it was just another anonymous shot in the endless volleys of nasty campaigning in South Carolina.

A bit late, winter grips Midwest and Northeast

CHICAGO — It’s finally looking like winter in parts of the Midwest and Northeast that are seeing their first big snowstorm of the season, leaving skiers and snow-reliant businesses giddy but presenting Friday commuters with a sloppy, slippery drive.
