BEIRUT — Gun­men fired rocket-propelled grenades and machine guns early Mon­day in intense street bat­tles in the Lebanese cap­i­tal, wound­ing six peo­ple as fears mounted that the con­flict in neigh­bor­ing Syria was bleed­ing across the border.

Congress clears $662B defense bill

WASHINGTON — Con­gress passed a mas­sive $662 bil­lion defense bill Thurs­day after months of wran­gling over how to han­dle cap­tured ter­ror sus­pects with­out vio­lat­ing Amer­i­cans’ con­sti­tu­tional rights. A last-minute com­pro­mise pro­duced a truce, but law­mak­ers said the fight is not yet over.

Syrian troops fire during protests; 27 killed

BEIRUT — Syr­ian secu­rity forces opened fire on protests around the coun­try Fri­day in the lat­est sign the con­flict could be mov­ing toward a long and bloody stale­mate as Pres­i­dent Bashar Assad shrugged off tighter sanc­tions and U.S. calls to step aside. Human rights activists said at least 27 peo­ple were killed, includ­ing a 10-year-old boy.
