Debt deal sets up another round of Medicare cuts

WASHINGTON — Medicare and Med­ic­aid were spared from imme­di­ate cuts in the debt deal, but it looks like just a tem­po­rary reprieve. Advo­cates for seniors and lob­by­ists for the health care indus­try are wor­ried that Round Two of the bud­get bat­tle, begin­ning this fall, could lead to cuts that raise costs for ben­e­fi­cia­ries and squeeze providers such as hos­pi­tals, doc­tors, insur­ers and drug companies.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Defy­ing a veto threat, the Republican-controlled House voted Tues­day night to slice fed­eral spend­ing by $6 tril­lion and require a con­sti­tu­tional bal­anced bud­get amend­ment to be sent to the states in exchange for avert­ing a threat­ened Aug. 2 gov­ern­ment default.

USDA lowers pork’s safe cooking temp

The U.S. Depart­ment of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspec­tion Ser­vice will announce Tues­day that it has low­ered its tem­per­a­ture rec­om­men­da­tion for cook­ing pork to 145 degrees. That’s a change from the agency’s long­stand­ing guide­line and means pork will be held to the same stan­dard as beef, veal and lamb.

Delaware City School Board still deciding on operating levy amount

The Delaware City School Board has taken another step toward plac­ing a tax issue on the Novem­ber bal­lot. Although the board hasn’t decided on a set length or dol­lar amount, it passed a res­o­lu­tion Mon­day to deter­mine how many mills it would take to raise about $6 mil­lion a year.

Buckeye Valley delays vote on cuts

Buck­eye Val­ley school board mem­bers delayed a vote Tues­day night that would cut three teach­ers, one main­te­nance worker, one mechanic and one bus dri­ver as part of $537,000 in cuts.
