Deputies plead not guilty to misusing police database

In a court­room full of their sup­port­ers, three Delaware County Sheriff’s deputies accused of ille­gally using a police data­base that pro­vides back­ground on indi­vid­u­als pleaded not guilty in sep­a­rate Delaware County Com­mon Pleas court­rooms Wednes­day. Deputies Lyle A. Chasse, Robert E. Cur­ren and James F. Cuc­carese II each entered not guilty pleas to fifth-degree felony counts of unau­tho­rized use of prop­erty, specif­i­cally the Law Enforce­ment Auto­mated Data­base Sys­tem, also called LEADS. Chasse faces three counts; Cuc­carese, two counts; and Cur­ren, one count.

Three Delaware County sheriff’s deputies were indicted Fri­day for ille­gally using a police data­base; at least two are appar­ently accused of using it to snoop on a local elected offi­cial who feuded with the sheriff’s office.

Delaware County sees slight uptick of thefts, decline of violent crimes

The nation’s prop­erty crime rate are on the rise in non-metropolitan coun­ties, accord­ing to FBI reports. Sim­i­lar records pro­vided by local law enforce­ment agen­cies sug­gest that Delaware County is no excep­tion. A recent Fed­eral Bureau of Inves­ti­ga­tion report finds that prop­erty crime increased 2.0 per­cent in “non-metropolitan” coun­ties between 2009 and 2010. In con­trast, larger cities expe­ri­enced a 1.9-percent decrease.

Police thank Wal-Mart employees for averting ‘Grandma Scam’

Local police per­son­ally thanked Delaware Wal-Mart employ­ees for help­ing pre­vent a rel­a­tively new scam tar­get­ing the elderly. The “Grandma Scam” preys on senior cit­i­zens who are likely to have good credit or own their own homes. Two such Delaware city res­i­dents appeared to have fallen vic­tim to this scam when they attempted to get money orders to send funds out­side the coun­try, accord­ing to the Delaware City Police Depart­ment. In both cases, Wal-Mart employ­ees rec­og­nized the signs of the scam, asked the appro­pri­ate ques­tions and thwarted a ploy that could have cost the grand­par­ents thou­sands of dol­lars, the DCPD reported.

Fugitives arrested during warrant sweep

The Delaware County Sheriff’s Office, in part­ner­ship with the South­ern Ohio Fugi­tive Appre­hen­sion Strike Team (SOFAST) arrested 16 fugi­tives wanted on Delaware County war­rants. The arrests were made on Sat­ur­day and Sun­day dur­ing a two-day war­rant sweep. The fugi­tives were wanted for crimes includ­ing drug charges, theft and fail­ure to pay child support.

National Night Out activities scheduled in county

A grow­ing annual event in Pow­ell aims to fos­ter com­mu­nity spirit and crime pre­ven­tion awareness.Powell’s National Night Out, an event that hap­pens in com­mu­ni­ties nation­wide, is set for 6:30 to 9 p.m. Tues­day at Vil­lage Green Park, 47 Hall St. The free fam­ily event is oper­at­ing under an ice cream social theme, said Pow­ell Police Depart­ment Sgt. Scott Roach.

Sheriff cruiser involved in crash

Two peo­ple were injured Wednes­day fol­low­ing a crash involv­ing a Delaware County Sheriff’s car near the inter­sec­tion of U.S. 23 and West Pow­ell Road Wednes­day morning.

Rash of thefts kick off summer trend

The rise in tem­per­a­tures cor­re­lates with a rise in crime, espe­cially theft, accord­ing to law enforce­ment officials.
