The reports of the death of the Delaware Arts Cas­tle may not have been greatly exag­ger­ated, though they were a bit pre­ma­ture. The orga­ni­za­tion nearly closed its doors for good in 2011, but ended up sur­viv­ing a very dif­fi­cult year finan­cially after imple­ment­ing a num­ber of cost-cutting measures.

The Delaware County Dis­trict Library opened its fourth branch this year. The $8.5-million, 33,000-square-foot Orange Branch Library at 7171 Good­ing Blvd. in Delaware was made pos­si­ble through voter sup­port of a 2009 levy.

Irvin L. Miller, 66, for­merly of Rad­nor, passed away Thurs­day morn­ing (Nov. 10, 2011) at Select Spe­cialty Hos­pi­tal in Colum­bus, after an extended ill­ness. Gazette welcomes Koon as publisher

A vet­eran news­pa­per exec­u­tive has been named as The Delaware Gazette’s new pub­lisher. Scott Koon, 59, took the helm of the Gazette this week. Koon has held a vari­ety of senior-level news­pa­per posi­tions. He was pre­vi­ously the pub­lisher of the Daily Amer­i­can and South­ern Illi­nois Trader as well as regional man­ager for 18 south­ern Illi­nois news­pa­pers. Prior to that, he was a regional man­ager for Amer­i­can Pub­lish­ing Co., pub­lisher of the Web­ster City, Iowa Daily Free­man and pub­lisher of the Emmets­burg Pub­lish­ing Com­pany in Iowa.

Delaware-born journalist, author Howard Bryan dies at 91

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — Howard Bryan, an Ohio-born writer who moved to New Mex­ico to become one of the state’s most well-known jour­nal­ists and the author of a num­ber of books about his adopted state, died Sat­ur­day, pub­lisher and friend Mar­cia Kee­gan said. He was 91. Kee­han said Bryan died in his Albu­querque home from a can­cer­ous tumor in his nose.
