The library is the place for pupils

With the holidays now pleasant memories, many folks have returned to their regular school schedules. The Delaware County District Library offers a wide menu of support for students of all kinds — traditional, nontraditional — and ages — children, teens and adults.

The Delaware County District Library opened its fourth branch this year. The $8.5-million, 33,000-square-foot Orange Branch Library at 7171 Gooding Blvd. in Delaware was made possible through voter support of a 2009 levy.

Library possesses several types of eReaders

If you’re confused about which eReader device to buy for yourself or for a gift, don’t despair — the Delaware County District Library is here to help. We have purchased two or three of several different types of eReaders, such as the Nook, Nook Reader, Kindle, Kindle Fire and even iPads in their latest versions, to demonstrate them and to allow you to have a hands-on experience with several devices, all in one place. Unlike retail stores, the library staff won’t encourage you to buy one type of eReader over another; our only goal is to make sure you have all the information you need to buy the one that best suits your needs.

‘Reading Your Credit Report’ at the library

Keeping track of your personal financial history is becoming more and more complicated these days, as credit card companies change their rules, new regulatory laws are enacted, and our exposure to fraud and identity theft increases. The libraries in Delaware County want to help you understand your credit report with a program entitled, “Credit Reports: Reading Your Credit Report” offered at two locations in the next few days.

eBooks available for download at the library

Recently, a patron of the Delaware County District Library shared a wonderful story that deserves to be share with all of you. A very lovely woman dropped by my office to thank me for having eBooks available at the library because she enjoyed downloading them to read on her Nook at no cost. The addition of eBooks to the library’s collection has provided patrons with yet another format to access their favorite author or book. Anyone with a Delaware County Library card can download eBooks to their eReader (except for Kindles, at least for the time being), iPad, iPhone, or computer by clicking on “EBooks” on our website.

Hold it: The library’s got you covered

Sometimes when you look for a book, DVD or other item at the Delaware County District Library, you may find that the title is already checked out to another library customer. While we diligently try to satisfy the demand for specific titles by purchasing multiple copies, the library’s budget (and shelves!) simply will not accommodate buying enough copies of bestselling books or blockbuster movies for every customer who would like to check it out. I hope, though, that you are familiar with the much-used “hold” or “reserve” service at the Delaware County District Library.
