As you probably know, the Delaware County District Library offers story times for infants, toddlers and preschoolers at all of our locations. In fact, among the Main, Orange, Powell and Ostrander branches, you can choose from 17 different story times, presented by nine different librarians, making it easy to find the perfect program for your little one. The library also offers programs for older kids as well as adults. At the Delaware (Main) Library, families of all varieties are invited to “Right on the Money,” part of the “Making Cents” financial literacy programs, 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 27. Also at 7 p.m. Sept. 27, the Orange Branch staff will offer the family program “Superhero Training Camp.”

Several months ago, the Boards of Trustees of the Delaware County District Library, Community Library of Sunbury, and the Wornstaff Memorial Library of Ashley met to discuss ways in which the three libraries could collaborate to serve all of our customers more cost effectively and efficiently. One outcome of that meeting was to plan a series of programs on personal financial literacy, to be offered at all library locations. I am very pleased to announce that “Making Cents: A Financial Literacy Series for All Ages” will kick off at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 8, at the Delaware (Main) Library, 84 E. Winter St., Delaware.

Participants in the programs received small incentives throughout the summer, including a book light, a water bottle and a messenger bag.

The residents of Delaware County are certainly finding the Delaware County District Library’s new Orange Branch! Since it opened in May, the Orange Branch has registered an astounding 5,700 new customers through June. Thank you, Delaware, for your support and for embracing this new branch facility and all it has to offer.
You may be surprised to learn that according to a recent study entitled, “Perceptions of Libraries 2010,” teens are among the heaviest library users. While two out of every three Americans have a library card, 75 percent of teens (ages 14–17) have one. The majority (62 percent) of Americans visits their library annually, and teens are even more likely to do so (72 percent).

Sometimes when you look for a book, DVD or other item at the Delaware County District Library, you may find that the title is already checked out to another library customer. While we diligently try to satisfy the demand for specific titles by purchasing multiple copies, the library’s budget (and shelves!) simply will not accommodate buying enough copies of bestselling books or blockbuster movies for every customer who would like to check it out. I hope, though, that you are familiar with the much-used “hold” or “reserve” service at the Delaware County District Library.
Each month, the Delaware County District Library’s librarians work diligently to select books, DVDs and audio books to be purchased for the library system. They read reviews, watch professional journals, check library blogs and even visit book stores to make sure that they are choosing items that are responsive to and useful for the Delaware community. As the new items are added to the shelves, they are distributed among the four branches: Delaware (Main), Powell, Ostrander and Orange.
