Yahoo’s $7.1B deal with Alibaba offers ray of hope

SAN FRANCISCO — After years of mortifying missteps, Yahoo Inc. finally has something to boast about: a multibillion-dollar windfall from a savvy investment in China.

Change can be good, but it is seldom painless

While in Columbus last week President Obama suggested that those who oppose alternative energy sources might be considered members of the “flat earth society,” much like people who opposed exploration by the likes of Christopher Columbus. In this instance, according to the president, those who cling to fossil fuels and ignore alternative energy sources are much like ostriches, plunging their heads into the ground and failing to understand the need for change in any active, growing and healthy economy.

Earth to satellite: When will you hit — and where?

CAPE CANAVERAL, Florida — NASA scientists are doing their best to tell us where a plummeting six-ton satellite will fall later this week. It’s just that if they’re off a little bit, it could mean the difference between hitting Florida or landing on New York. Or, say, Iran or India. Pinpointing where and when hurtling space debris will strike is an imprecise science. For now, scientists predict the earliest it will hit is Thursday U.S. time, the latest Saturday. The strike zone covers most of Earth.
