Ohio Senate exploring idea repeal of election law

COLUMBUS — Several Republican state senators have been reviewing for weeks the idea of repealing Ohio’s new elections law that trims early voting days in the presidential battleground state and makes other election changes, the leader of Ohio’s Senate said Thursday.

COLUMBUS — After years of expanding when and how people can vote, state legislatures now under new Republican control are moving to trim early voting days, beef up identification requirements and put new restrictions on how voters are notified about absentee ballots.

Officials settle Ohio absentee applications spat

TOLEDO — Ohio will mail absentee ballot request forms to voters in all counties ahead of the 2012 presidential election, settling a dispute between the state’s top election official and the leader of the state’s largest county. As part of the agreement announced Friday, Cuyahoga County officials agreed not to send out unsolicited mailings for absentee ballots for this year’s general election. Cuyahoga County officials in Cleveland had threatened to defy Secretary of State Jon Husted’s order barring county elections boards from mailing the unsolicited applications. The county’s council earlier in the week authorized mailings to all registered voters.

Orange trustees again looking to fill vacancy

For the second time in a year, Orange Township trustees are looking for someone to finish a term that expires in 2013. Trustee Jennifer Christian recently informed trustees at a special meeting July 13 that she will be resigning her position effective Aug. 8 to take an out of town job. Christian, a former township park board member, was herself appointed to the seat in July 2010 to replace former trustee John Cassady, who also stepped down because of a private sector job opportunity.

Election board to decide on subdivision petition

The Delaware County Board of Elections on Monday will consider whether Liberty Township residents will have a chance to put the brakes on plans for a 216-acre housing development along the Olentangy River. A lawyer representing the developers of the planned 148-home subdivision, to be located southwest of the corner of Ohio 315 and Home Road, has asked the Delaware County Board of Elections to throw out a resident-circulated referendum petition.
