A front-page story in last week’s Delaware Gazette noted the adoption of a contract for “respite” services for juveniles. The story incorrectly reported that the contract was for $110,000 rather than its actual value of just $10,000 (the Gazette kindly printed a correction the following day) and the article didn’t have the space to go into the reasons behind the use of respite care and the source of the funding used to provide it.

Incumbent county commissioner Ken O’Brien is running for another term to “ensure the taxpayer dollars are wisely spent”; and to finish projects currently underway.

Late last week the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services released December 2011 employment/unemployment figures for the greater Columbus area, with the unemployment rate — not adjusted for seasonal variations — dropping to 6.4 percent. This rate was down from November’s 6.6 percent, and was far below the unemployment rate of 7.7 percent in December 2010. And the reaction at the Department of Job and Family Services? According to their spokesman, Benjamin Johnson, “It shows definite improvement … (i)t shows a strengthening economy and an improving job market.”
You know that you have a substantial domestic problem when news agencies an ocean away take note of it. It caught my attention, therefore, when the British Broadcasting Corporation recently completed a report titled, “Major Epidemic: The Untold Story of Child Abuse in the U.S.”
