Obama to Congress: ‘Keep going’ on economy front

WASHINGTON — Rel­ish­ing a polit­i­cal vic­tory, Pres­i­dent Barack Obama said Tues­day that Con­gress “did the right thing” by extend­ing pay­roll tax cuts for mil­lions of Amer­i­cans. He urged law­mak­ers to push for­ward on more mea­sures, from assis­tance to strug­gling home­own­ers to increased taxes on the wealthy, say­ing the loom­ing elec­tion was no excuse for inac­tion in Washington.

Obama seeks to broaden reach of housing assistance

FALLS CHURCH, Va. — Con­ced­ing his ear­lier hous­ing pro­grams have fallen short, Pres­i­dent Barack Obama on Wednes­day pro­posed a vast expan­sion of gov­ern­ment assis­tance to home­own­ers, aim­ing to make lower lend­ing rates a pos­si­bil­ity for mil­lions of bor­row­ers who have not been able to get out from under bur­den­some mortgages.

Congress OKs bill averting government shutdown

WASHINGTON — A week­end gov­ern­ment shut­down that nei­ther party wanted was averted when Con­gress approved a com­pro­mise spend­ing bill Thurs­day, as lead­ers over­came major defec­tions by Repub­li­cans angry over what they con­sid­ered exces­sive spend­ing. To the dis­may of lib­er­als, the mea­sure also blocks Obama admin­is­tra­tion plans to impose stricter nutri­tion stan­dards on school lunches.
