Report: Mercury levels mostly down in Great Lakes

DETROIT — Mer­cury lev­els have dropped about 20 per­cent in the Great Lakes in recent decades but remain dan­ger­ously high and are get­ting worse in some places, sci­en­tists said in a report released Tuesday.

AEP: New rules would lead to shutdowns, job cuts

COLUMBUS — Amer­i­can Elec­tric Power Co. Inc. warned Thurs­day that it would have to shut down five plants and reduce oper­a­tions at six oth­ers, at a cost of 600 jobs, to com­ply with new rules for coal-fired power plants pro­posed by the U.S. Envi­ron­men­tal Pro­tec­tion Agency.
