Meyer returns home to coach Ohio State

COLUMBUS — Urban Meyer is back on famil­iar turf, fit and rarin’ to go as Ohio State’s new foot­ball coach. With­out ques­tion, he’d like to add to the national titles and suc­cess he had at Florida — only this time with a bet­ter end­ing: No burnout.

The season is upon us

Thanks­giv­ing is behind us and thus a new sea­son is upon us — Michi­gan sea­son. After all, Thanks­giv­ing was yes­ter­day and Advent doesn’t begin until Sun­day, so some­thing has to fill the gap. In Ohio, that some­thing is clearly focused on the foot­ball game to be played tomor­row in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

The Red Dev­ils lived up to their pre-game billing.Undefeated and top-seeded Marion-Franklin (11–0), led by 6-foot, 192-pound junior quar­ter­back Corry Ben­son, struck for four opening-half touch­downs en route to a 44–17 vic­tory over fourth-seeded Big Wal­nut (9–3) in a Region 7 semi­fi­nal matchup Fri­day night at Selby Sta­dium on the cam­pus of Ohio Wes­leyan University.

Penn State shaken after firing of Paterno

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. — After nearly a half-century on the job, Joe Paterno says he is still get­ting used to the idea of not being Penn State’s foot­ball coach. So is the rest of the shaken cam­pus, after one of the most tumul­tuous days in its his­tory. In less than 24 hours Wednes­day, the win­ningest coach in major col­lege foot­ball announced his retire­ment at the end of the sea­son — then was abruptly fired by the board of trustees.

It wasn’t the first trip to a Divi­sion I regional foot­ball quar­ter­fi­nal for Orange coach Brian Cross, but the same couldn’t be said for his team, and the Pio­neers found the road in Divi­sion I can be plenty rough.Orange’s first ven­ture into the big school divi­sion had its moments, but the Hilliard David­son Wild­cats had many more and knocked the Pio­neers out of the play­offs with a 22–0 vic­tory Sat­ur­day night at the Hilliard David­son Sports Complex.

Eagles to host Cougars in regional opener

For the eighth time in 12 years, the Golden Eagles are back in the OHSAA foot­ball play­offs. Fourth-seeded Big Wal­nut (8–2) will host fifth-seeded Colum­bus Beechcroft (9–1) in a Region 9 quar­ter­fi­nal game Fri­day night at 7:30 at Golden Eagle Stadium.

Barons clip Comets in season finale

MARION — After last week’s loss in their final home game, the Buck­eye Val­ley Barons decided to make this week’s game their senior night.The Barons com­bined for nearly 400 yards in total offense and held down the Elgin Comets most of the way, fin­ish­ing with a 22–7 Mid-Ohio Ath­letic Con­fer­ence Red Divi­sion vic­tory and their sixth win­ning sea­son of their last seven Fri­day night at Elgin High School.
