The grand cham­pion gilt and bar­row sold for about $2,300 and 1,500, respec­tively, at the Delaware County Junior Fair mar­ket hog auc­tion. The gilt, 255 pounds, was exhib­ited by Jes­sica Harsh. It was pur­chased by Foos Farms/Parrot Implement/ Rich­wood Bank for $9 per pound.

The last remnants of an era evaporates: Nestle plant comes down

The main block of the Nes­tle Build­ing on South Colum­bus Street (Old 3C High­way) in Sun­bury was demol­ished last Wednes­day. Work­ers knocked block and con­crete walls out of the ground floor over the past week, cut through the bases of the I-beam build­ing struc­ture, attached cables, and then, using three track-hoes and a bull­dozer, pulled the south­west cor­ner of the build­ing out­ward. When the build­ing started to lean, grav­ity took over and did the rest.

Demand has US looking to expand canola crop

DES MOINES, Iowa — The demand for canola, best known for the cook­ing oil it pro­duces, con­tin­ues to rise and the indus­try is work­ing to grow more of the plant in the U.S. to keep pace with increased sales. Experts said the best hope for meet­ing demand is to grow a vari­ety of canola that is planted in the fall and har­vested in the spring, offer­ing farm­ers in some regions a chance to make use of their land dur­ing a nor­mally dor­mant period.

Police calm London, but riots flare across UK

LONDON — Thou­sands more police offi­cers flooded Lon­don streets Tues­day in a bid to end Britain’s worst riot­ing in a gen­er­a­tion as ner­vous shop­keep­ers closed early and some res­i­dents stood guard to pro­tect their neigh­bor­hoods. An eerie calm pre­vailed in the city, but unrest spread across cen­tral and north­ern Eng­land on a fourth night of vio­lence dri­ven by poor, diverse and brazen crowds of young people.

Murdoch rejects blame for hack scandal at hearing

LONDON (AP) — Sum­moned by law­mak­ers to answer for a phone hack­ing and bribery scan­dal at one of his tabloids, Rupert Mur­doch said he was hum­bled and ashamed Tues­day but accepted no respon­si­bil­ity for wrong­do­ing as a widen­ing inves­ti­ga­tion threat­ened to ensnare Britain’s prime minister.
