Defense of Marriage Act heads to US Supreme Court

BOSTON — A bat­tle over a fed­eral law that defines mar­riage as a union between a man and a woman appears headed for the Supreme Court after an appeals court ruled Thurs­day that deny­ing ben­e­fits to mar­ried gay cou­ples is unconstitutional.

Scientists hunt ways to stall Alzheimer’s earlier

WASHINGTON — Look for a fun­da­men­tal shift in how sci­en­tists hunt ways to ward off the dev­as­ta­tion of Alzheimer’s dis­ease — by test­ing pos­si­ble ther­a­pies in peo­ple who don’t yet show many symp­toms, before too much of the brain is destroyed.

Study finds some early breast cancer overdiagnosed

NEW YORK — For years, women have been urged to get screened for breast can­cer because the ear­lier it’s found, the bet­ter. Now researchers are report­ing more evi­dence sug­gest­ing that’s not always the case. A study in Nor­way esti­mates that between 15 and 25 per­cent of breast can­cers found by mam­mo­grams wouldn’t have caused any prob­lems dur­ing a woman’s life­time, but these tumors were being treated any­way. Once detected, early tumors are sur­gi­cally removed and some­times treated with radi­a­tion or chemother­apy because there’s no cer­tain way to fig­ure out which ones may be dan­ger­ous and which are harmless.

Experts: Soldier might have post-traumatic stress

They are ques­tions already being debated: Did the sol­dier sus­pected of killing Afghan vil­lagers have post-traumatic stress dis­or­der, or PTSD? And did the peo­ple who sent him back to war after he was injured prop­erly deter­mine he was men­tally fit to return?
