WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court, sud­denly at the heart of pres­i­den­tial pol­i­tics, is prepar­ing what could be block­buster rul­ings on health care and immi­gra­tion shortly before the fall election.

WASHINGTON — As demon­stra­tions swirled out­side, Supreme Court jus­tices sig­naled on Mon­day they are ready to con­front with­out delay the keep-or-kill ques­tions at the heart of chal­lenges to Pres­i­dent Barack Obama’s his­toric health care over­haul. Vir­tu­ally every Amer­i­can will be affected by the out­come, due this sum­mer in the heat of the elec­tion campaign.

Preventive care: It’s free, except when it’s not

CHICAGO — Bill Dun­phy thought his colonoscopy would be free. His insur­ance com­pany told him it would be cov­ered 100 per­cent, with no copay­ment from him and no charge against his deductible. The nation’s 1-year-old health law requires most insur­ance plans to cover all costs for pre­ven­tive care includ­ing colon can­cer screen­ing. So Dun­phy had the pro­ce­dure in April. Then the bill arrived: $1,100.

Medicare premiums up, but not as much as expected

WASHINGTON — Good news for seniors: The gov­ern­ment says Medicare’s basic monthly pre­mium will rise less than expected next year, by $3.50 for most. It could be good, too, for Pres­i­dent Barack Obama and Democ­rats strug­gling for older Amer­i­cans’ votes in a close election.
