When a hit becomes a ‘hit’

March Madness is unde rway. Baseball season begins in two weeks. Clearly, it must be time for a column about the law of … football? Indeed, football is the sport making legal news right now both for the penalties it has just imposed on teams for violations of a non-existent salary cap in 2010 and, even more so, for the penalties that it is about to impose on teams for running a “bounty” system. The latter is more critical, and, though law enforcement officials in cities like New Orleans, Buffalo and Washington have already declined to become involved, it is the latter that also likely crossed the line into being criminal.

From the fieldhouse to the courthouse

Cincinnati was abuzz this week heading into the annual matchup between the city’s major collegiate basketball programs, Cincinnati and Xavier. Coming into the game, Xavier was ranked as the 8th best team in the nation and so it wasn’t surprising that as the final seconds ticked off the clock, Xavier was winning by a comfortable margin.

Two Ohio Wesleyan University field hockey players were named to the National Field Hockey Coaches Association All-Great Lakes Region teams, it was announced by the NFHCA.

Olentangy Liberty was strong to start its OHSAA state semifinal showdown, up 2–1 heading into the second period, but Toledo St. Francis DeSales went on an 8–2 scoring spree the rest of the way to nab a 9–4 win Saturday afternoon at Nationwide Arena. The Knights (34–4-1), the top-seed from the Sylvania District, scored the game’s first goal 6:36 into the opening period as Ben Torchia, who finished with a hat trick, slipped a close-range shot past Patriot (27–9-1) goalie Eddie Arcy.

Olentangy Liberty has one heck of a hockey family. That’s right, family. The Patriots are a team, sure, but play more like a band of brothers, a trait that has carried them all the way to their sport’s biggest stage — the OHSAA state final four.“This group isn’t only a team, but a group of friends,” defenseman and captain Anthony Bergamesca, who has an actual sibling, younger brother Christopher, on the squad with him said. “We have accomplished everything on our check list so far … just one check to go, and that’s the state title.”

Liberty looks to make more history

When the season started, Liberty knew it would be competing for a championship — a title it wrapped up by finishing with a 12–1 record in league play en route to nabbing the Capital Hockey Conference co-championship with Dublin Jerome.
