More Secret Service agents gone; Obama briefed

WASHINGTON — Three more Secret Ser­vice offi­cers resigned Fri­day in the expand­ing pros­ti­tu­tion scan­dal that has brought scorch­ing crit­i­cism of agents’ behav­ior in Colom­bia just before Pres­i­dent Barack Obama’s visit for a sum­mit meet­ing last week. Agency Direc­tor Mark Sul­li­van came to the White House late Fri­day to per­son­ally brief Obama in the Oval Office.

WASHINGTON — Mov­ing swiftly, the Secret Ser­vice forced out three agents Wednes­day in a pros­ti­tu­tion scan­dal that has embar­rassed Pres­i­dent Barack Obama. A senior con­gress­man wel­comed the move to hold peo­ple respon­si­ble for the tawdry episode but warned “it’s not over.”

US makes criminals priority for deportation

WASHINGTON — Many ille­gal immi­grants who were fac­ing depor­ta­tion despite hav­ing no crim­i­nal record will be allowed to stay in the coun­try and apply for a work per­mit under new rules from the Home­land Secu­rity Depart­ment. Repub­li­cans are balk­ing at the change. Home­land Secu­rity Sec­re­tary Janet Napoli­tano announced Thurs­day that the depart­ment will focus on deport­ing ille­gal immi­grants who are crim­i­nals or pose a threat to national secu­rity or pub­lic safety.

AP Sources: Bin Laden documents sharpen US aim

WASHINGTON — The U.S. is track­ing pos­si­ble new ter­ror tar­gets and step­ping up sur­veil­lance of oper­a­tives pre­vi­ously con­sid­ered minor al-Qaida fig­ures after dig­ging through the moun­tain of cor­re­spon­dence seized from Osama bin Laden’s hide­out, offi­cials say. The trove of mate­r­ial is fill­ing in blanks on how al-Qaida oper­a­tives work, think and fit in the orga­ni­za­tion, they say.
