Study links vets to brain disease seen in athletes

WASHINGTON — A small study raises more concern about the long-term consequences of brain injuries suffered by thousands of soldiers — suggesting they may be at risk of developing the same degenerative brain disease as some retired football players.

Experts: Soldier might have post-traumatic stress

They are questions already being debated: Did the soldier suspected of killing Afghan villagers have post-traumatic stress disorder, or PTSD? And did the people who sent him back to war after he was injured properly determine he was mentally fit to return?

When a hit becomes a ‘hit’

March Madness is unde rway. Baseball season begins in two weeks. Clearly, it must be time for a column about the law of … football? Indeed, football is the sport making legal news right now both for the penalties it has just imposed on teams for violations of a non-existent salary cap in 2010 and, even more so, for the penalties that it is about to impose on teams for running a “bounty” system. The latter is more critical, and, though law enforcement officials in cities like New Orleans, Buffalo and Washington have already declined to become involved, it is the latter that also likely crossed the line into being criminal.

It wasn’t the first trip to a Division I regional football quarterfinal for Orange coach Brian Cross, but the same couldn’t be said for his team, and the Pioneers found the road in Division I can be plenty rough.Orange’s first venture into the big school division had its moments, but the Hilliard Davidson Wildcats had many more and knocked the Pioneers out of the playoffs with a 22–0 victory Saturday night at the Hilliard Davidson Sports Complex.
