GOP derails Senate ‘Buffett rule’ taxes on wealthy

WASHINGTON — Sen­ate Repub­li­cans derailed a Demo­c­ra­tic “Buf­fett rule” bill Mon­day forc­ing the nation’s top earn­ers to pay at least 30 per­cent of their income in taxes, using the day before Amer­i­cans’ taxes are due to defy Pres­i­dent Barack Obama on one of his sig­na­ture election-year issues.

Afghan officials: Fire from Pakistan led to attack

ISLAMABAD — Afghanistan offi­cials claimed Sun­day that Afghan and NATO forces were retal­i­at­ing for gun­fire from two Pak­istani army bases when they called in airstrikes that killed 24 Pak­istani sol­diers, adding a layer of com­plex­ity to an episode that has fur­ther strained Pakistan’s ties with the United States.

Debt panel poised to admit failure

WASHINGTON (AP) — A spe­cial deficit-reduction super­com­mit­tee appears likely to admit fail­ure on Mon­day, unable or unwill­ing to com­pro­mise on a mix of spend­ing cuts and tax increases required to meet its assign­ment of sav­ing tax­pay­ers at least $1.2 tril­lion over the com­ing decade.

WASHINGTON (AP) — Under an urgent dead­line, Pres­i­dent Barack Obama and con­gres­sional nego­tia­tors set their sights on the nation’s tax sys­tem and cher­ished ben­e­fit pro­grams Thurs­day in hopes of strik­ing a mas­sive bud­get deal to raise the nation’s debt ceil­ing. Obama said the two sides were still far apart and called every­one back to the White House on Sunday.
