US will not help pay for Europe’s debt woes

WASHINGTON — Pres­i­dent Barack Obama said Mon­day the United States stands ready to do its part to help Europe with its deep­en­ing debt cri­sis, even as the White House ruled out any finan­cial con­tri­bu­tions from U.S. taxpayers.

A mother who donated her son’s organs to save another was hon­ored Tues­day morn­ing — as was a teen who turned her grad­u­a­tion into a food drive, a detec­tive who saved three lives, a cho­rus direc­tor who refused to give up and many oth­ers who pos­i­tively impacted the Delaware com­mu­nity this year.

Just one week ago I used this space to note a BBC report on the epi­demic of child abuse in Amer­ica which stressed the fact that only vig­i­lance and report­ing by the pub­lic can help stop the cycle of vio­lence against chil­dren. Our child pro­tec­tion ser­vices case­work­ers and police inves­ti­ga­tors do a spec­tac­u­lar job of inves­ti­gat­ing abuse after it has occurred but we per­pet­u­ate that abuse if we see the signs of it and fail to report it.

The Delaware City Police Depart­ment asked city coun­cil to con­sider replac­ing its three old­est cruis­ers next year with SUVs, a replace­ment for which about $100,000 is budgeted.

Julie Robinson-Wileschael still can’t watch the images of Sept. 11 that cycle over and over on TV. Robinson-Wileschael was one of sev­eral first respon­ders 10 years ago at Ground Zero. “I went because I had the abil­ity to go and help. It was my oblig­a­tion to do that.”she said.

Community figures share thoughts on 9/11

Anger, vul­ner­a­bil­ity and shock were com­mon reac­tions many Delaware County com­mu­nity mem­bers expe­ri­enced dur­ing the 9/11 ter­ror­ist attacks. Even 10 years later, some of those feel­ings still linger. Yet unity, aware­ness, and a broader world view also pre­vail. Reflect­ing on 9/11, peo­ple rep­re­sent­ing var­i­ous per­spec­tives of this com­mu­nity shared how that day has con­tin­ued to influ­ence their lives.
