When a hit becomes a ‘hit’

March Madness is unde rway. Baseball season begins in two weeks. Clearly, it must be time for a column about the law of … football? Indeed, football is the sport making legal news right now both for the penalties it has just imposed on teams for violations of a non-existent salary cap in 2010 and, even more so, for the penalties that it is about to impose on teams for running a “bounty” system. The latter is more critical, and, though law enforcement officials in cities like New Orleans, Buffalo and Washington have already declined to become involved, it is the latter that also likely crossed the line into being criminal.

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. — Happy Valley was perfect for Joe Paterno, a place where “JoePa” knew best, where he not only won more football games than any other major college coach, but won them the right way: with integrity and sportsmanship. A place where character came first, championships second.

It will be a rematch of 2010’s Division II Region 7 semifinalists when fourth-seeded Big Walnut (9–2) takes on top-seeded and undefeated Columbus Marion-Franklin (11–0) tonight at Ohio Wesleyan University’s Selby Stadium … all with a trip to the regional championship on the line.

It wasn’t the first trip to a Division I regional football quarterfinal for Orange coach Brian Cross, but the same couldn’t be said for his team, and the Pioneers found the road in Division I can be plenty rough.Orange’s first venture into the big school division had its moments, but the Hilliard Davidson Wildcats had many more and knocked the Pioneers out of the playoffs with a 22–0 victory Saturday night at the Hilliard Davidson Sports Complex.

It was Golden Eagle football at its best … a solid ground game combined with an equally solid defense.

Sloppy Chicago clips OWU

Again, it was a game of missed opportunities for Mike Hollway’s struggling Battling Bishops. The University of Chicago (3–2) survived six turnovers, four coming on its first four offensive series on two interceptions and two fumbles, in handing Ohio Wesleyan (1–4) a 21–10 non-conference setback in front of a gathering of 2,360 fans on Homecoming Day at Selby Stadium.

Wooster starts fast, holds off OWU for 10-6 win

Freshman kicker Miles MacKenzie (Denver, Colo./East) booted a pair of field goals to bring Ohio Wesleyan within 10–6, but that was as close as the Bishops would come in a North Coast Athletic Conference contest against Wooster on Saturday in Wooster.
