Just one week ago I used this space to note a BBC report on the epidemic of child abuse in America which stressed the fact that only vigilance and reporting by the public can help stop the cycle of violence against children. Our child protection services caseworkers and police investigators do a spectacular job of investigating abuse after it has occurred but we perpetuate that abuse if we see the signs of it and fail to report it.
A 62-year-old Delaware man with a lengthy rap sheet who was arrested on a Los Angeles 1978 murder charge Monday night ironically served on the block watch and safety committee for the retirement community where he lived, according to neighbors there.

Long-time parade goers said the Delaware City celebrations continue to be a Fourth of July highlight. They added, however, that the festivities are about more than getting just the best spot on the sidewalk.

Local law enforcement respond to a suicide threat near the corner of N. Sandusky Street and E. Lincoln Avenue Tuesday night. Authorities reported that the man cooperated with the negotiations unit, and was removed from the scene uninjured.
