Ohio unveiling efforts targeting drug trafficking

COLUMBUS — New efforts to crack down on drug traf­fick­ing in Ohio include the intro­duc­tion of leg­is­la­tion tar­get­ing hid­den com­part­ments in vehi­cles and changes in how dri­vers can use the State High­way Patrol hot­line, which will get a new number.

Just one week ago I used this space to note a BBC report on the epi­demic of child abuse in Amer­ica which stressed the fact that only vig­i­lance and report­ing by the pub­lic can help stop the cycle of vio­lence against chil­dren. Our child pro­tec­tion ser­vices case­work­ers and police inves­ti­ga­tors do a spec­tac­u­lar job of inves­ti­gat­ing abuse after it has occurred but we per­pet­u­ate that abuse if we see the signs of it and fail to report it.

Local retiree arrested in ’78 Calif. murder

A 62-year-old Delaware man with a lengthy rap sheet who was arrested on a Los Ange­les 1978 mur­der charge Mon­day night iron­i­cally served on the block watch and safety com­mit­tee for the retire­ment com­mu­nity where he lived, accord­ing to neigh­bors there.

National Night Out activities scheduled in county

A grow­ing annual event in Pow­ell aims to fos­ter com­mu­nity spirit and crime pre­ven­tion awareness.Powell’s National Night Out, an event that hap­pens in com­mu­ni­ties nation­wide, is set for 6:30 to 9 p.m. Tues­day at Vil­lage Green Park, 47 Hall St. The free fam­ily event is oper­at­ing under an ice cream social theme, said Pow­ell Police Depart­ment Sgt. Scott Roach.

Long-time parade goers said the Delaware City cel­e­bra­tions con­tinue to be a Fourth of July high­light. They added, how­ever, that the fes­tiv­i­ties are about more than get­ting just the best spot on the sidewalk.

Local law enforce­ment respond to a sui­cide threat near the cor­ner of N. San­dusky Street and E. Lin­coln Avenue Tues­day night. Author­i­ties reported that the man coop­er­ated with the nego­ti­a­tions unit, and was removed from the scene uninjured.
