A bit late, winter grips Midwest and Northeast

CHICAGO — It’s finally look­ing like win­ter in parts of the Mid­west and North­east that are see­ing their first big snow­storm of the sea­son, leav­ing skiers and snow-reliant busi­nesses giddy but pre­sent­ing Fri­day com­muters with a sloppy, slip­pery drive.

Consumers hit retail stores to give economy boost

WASHINGTON — Con­sumers are giv­ing a mod­est lift to the econ­omy. They spent more on trucks, elec­tron­ics and build­ing sup­plies in Octo­ber to boost retail sales for the fifth straight month.
