WASHINGTON — Top con­gres­sional Repub­li­cans made a new offer to Pres­i­dent Barack Obama on Thurs­day in their fight over head­ing off a dou­bling of inter­est rates on fed­eral col­lege loans for 7.4 mil­lion stu­dents, propos­ing fresh ways to cover the effort’s $6 bil­lion cost.

WASHINGTON — Sen­ate Repub­li­cans derailed a Demo­c­ra­tic bill on Tues­day that would keep inter­est rates on fed­eral col­lege loans from dou­bling July 1 in an election-year bat­tle aimed at the hearts — and votes — of mil­lions of stu­dents and their parents.

WASHINGTON — In an esca­lat­ing election-year clash, the House will vote Fri­day on a $5.9 bil­lion Repub­li­can bill pre­vent­ing inter­est rates on fed­eral stu­dent loans from dou­bling this sum­mer, paid for by cut­ting money from Pres­i­dent Barack Obama’s health care over­haul law.
