US, Afghanistan reach deal on strategic pact

KABUL, Afghanistan — The U.S. and Afghanistan reached a deal Sun­day on a long-delayed strate­gic part­ner­ship agree­ment that ensures Amer­i­cans will pro­vide mil­i­tary and finan­cial sup­port to the Afghan peo­ple for at least a decade beyond 2014, the dead­line for most for­eign forces to withdraw.

Libya’s Moammar Gadhafi killed in hometown battle

SIRTE, Libya — Moam­mar Gad­hafi, Libya’s dic­ta­tor for 42 years until he was ousted in an uprising-turned-civil war, was killed Thurs­day as rev­o­lu­tion­ary fight­ers over­whelmed his home­town of Sirte and cap­tured the last major bas­tion of resis­tance two months after his regime fell. The 69-year-old Gad­hafi is the first leader to be killed in the Arab Spring wave of pop­u­lar upris­ings that swept the Mid­dle East, demand­ing the end of auto­cratic rulers and the estab­lish­ment of greater democracy.

US says it wants access to bin Laden widows

The United States wants access to Osama bin Laden’s three wid­ows and any intel­li­gence mate­r­ial its com­man­dos left behind at the al-Qaida leader’s com­pound, a top Amer­i­can offi­cial said in com­ments broad­cast Sun­day that could add a fresh stick­ing point in already frayed ties with Pakistan.
